Overview of Working Visas

Australia offers a range of working visas to skilled professionals, allowing them to live and work in the country, whether temporarily or permanently.


Working visas are designed for individuals with skills and qualifications in demand in Australia. These visas help you work in specific industries, fill labor shortages, or allow international companies to transfer employees. The main types include:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)
  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa (Subclass 494)
  • Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417/462)


Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)

The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled workers for temporary employment.


Key Features:

  • Short-Term Stream: Allows you to work for up to 2 years or up to 4 years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies. Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.
  • Medium-Term Stream: Allows you to work for up to 4 years. Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.
  • Labour Agreement Stream: For employers who have entered into a labour agreement with the Australian government. Allows you to work for up to 4 years. Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.
  • May be eligible for permanent resident visa (Subclass 186 Temporary Residence Transition or Labour Agreement streams) after two years with the nominated employer.


Eligibility Requirements:

  • Sponsorship: Be sponsored by an approved employer.
  • Occupation: Your occupation must be on the Skilled Occupation List.
  • Qualification/Work Experience: Meet the skills, qualification and experience requirements for your occupation.
  • English Proficiency: Pass an English language test (if required).


Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)

This visa is for skilled workers who want to work in Australia permanently and are nominated by an Australian employer.


Key Features:

  • Provides permanent residency for the visa holder and their family.
  • Includes three streams: Direct Entry, Temporary Residence Transition, and Labour Agreement.


Eligibility Requirements (exemption applies):

  • Age: Must be under 45 years of age when you apply for the visa.
  • Sponsorship: Must be sponsored by an Australian employer.
  • Skills Assessment: A positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation if go for Direct Entry.
  • Work Experience: At least 3 years of relevant work experience for Direct Entry.
  • English Proficiency: Competent English required.


Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa (Subclass 494)

 This visa allows skilled workers to live and work in designated regional areas of Australia.


Key Features:

  • Valid for 5 years with a pathway to permanent residency through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (Subclass 191).
  • Encourages migration to regional Australia.


Eligibility Requirements (exemption applies):

  • Age: Must be under 45 years of age when you apply for the visa.
  • Sponsorship: Must be sponsored by an Australian employer.
  • Skills Assessment: A positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation.
  • Work Experience: At least 3 years on a full-time basis and at the skill level required for the nominated occupation.
  • English Proficiency: Competent English required.


Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417/462)

This visa allows young people (aged 18 to 30/35) from eligible countries to work and holiday in Australia for up to one year.


Key Features:

  • Stay up to 12 months, with the possibility of extending for another year after working in specific industries (e.g., agriculture).
  • No sponsorship required, and it offers the flexibility to work in various industries during your stay.


Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a citizen of an eligible country.
  • Be between 18 and 30/35 years old (depending on your country).
  • Have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay.
